Profile of Vientiane Capital City

Vientiane is the capital city of Laos located on the banks of the Mekong River where it runs forming the border between Laos and Thailand.

Despite being the frequent target of invasions from neighboring states in the past, Vientiane plays an important role and is the center of government and culture as the capital of this Buddhist country. The city maintains numerous historical Buddhist temples and pagodas. There are many trees along streets and the city is called as the ‘Green Capital’.

 

Vientiane Capital City is the capital of Laos and the city also compromises 9 districts.

Motivation and background

In 2013 Kyoto City Zoo and Laos the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Lao People’s Democratic Republic signed a  Memorandum of Mutual Understanding on the Elephant Breeding Project and this event created an opportunity to start cultural exchanges. In 2014, during Mayor Kadokawa and the Kyoto City delegation’s visit to Vientiane, the former Mayor of Vientiane Capital City H.E. Soukanh Mahalath and Mayor Kadokawa confirmed that they would work together to strengthen their ties and create a partnership agreement between Kyoto and Vientiane City.

 

Since then the Wildlife Research Center of Kyoto University, National University of Laos and Kyoto City Zoo signed a memorandum of academic research and cooperation, and Ritsumeikan University and National University of Laos also had a comprehensive cooperative agreement. These agreements became the foundation for exchange and a soccer ball shaped seminar house was built in Vientiane City to further deepen academic exchange.

 

In November of 2014, the government of Laos donated 4 elephants to Kyoto City Zoo. In July 2015, Laos and Japan celebrated the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations and Prime Minister H.E.Thongsing Thammavong visited Kyoto and announced his wish to enter into a partnership agreement with Kyoto City. On November 3rd, 2015 the partnership agreement was signed.
