Profile of Jinju

Situated in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula, Jinju is known as the ancient capital of Goryeo Dynasty. It has 64 cultural heritage sites, and is blessed with rich natural beauty with Jinyangho Lake and Namgang River. Since it is also blessed with temperate climate, fruit and vegetable production has flourished here. Jinju is well-known for its silk production industry.

Jinju is also known as the city of higher education and academy with six universities such as Gyeongsang National University, Chinju National University of Education and Gyeongnam National University of Science and Technology.

Motivation and background

The city of Kyoto had hoped to establish a friendly relationship with one of the cities in the Republic of Korea, a close neighbor of Japan. Since Kyoto College of Art (at present Kyoto University of Art and Design) and Kyoto International Foundation was active in youth exchange and home stay programs with the city of Jinju, Kyoto established the partner city agreement with Jinju in the academic and educational fields in 1999.
