Profile of Qingdao

Located in the Shandong Province, Qingdao is a prominent trading port city in China. By the end of the 19th century, it was a small fishing village. After the Qing Dynasty government constructed military facilities there at the end of the 19th century, the city started developing. Later it prospered as a German model colony. Even today, German influence can be seen in its western style cityscape and Tsingtao beer. It is also known for being an international coastal resort because of its mild climate.

Motivation and background

After the mayor of Qingdao suggested to establish sister city relationship with Kyoto, in 2010, both cities started discussing about their relationship. Later, the citizens of both cities started to communicate frequently with each other. In 2012, the mayor of Kyoto visited Qingdao with “Kyoto-Qingdao Citizens Association”, and signed the partner city agreement with the mayor of Qingdao.
