Important Notes Regarding "My Number" Card When Notifying of Moving Out

If you hold a "My Number" Card and are submitting a moving-out notification, you will not need to present a paper “Certificate of Moving-Out” at the local government office at your new address. You can complete the procedure by presenting your "My Number" card instead of the moving-out certificate.

However, as we may not be able to adequately explain this at the counter to individuals such as international students who may not be proficient in Japanese, we also provide the paper "Certificate of Moving-Out" as a precaution. This document contains the address of your new residence as you filled in on the notification form and can be used for your verification purposes.

Should you forget to bring your "My Number" Card when notifying the city of your moving-in, you can still complete the process by presenting this "Certificate of Moving-Out" along with an identification document (such as your Residence Card).

Once your notification of moving abroad has been accepted at the ward office, your resident registration will be cancelled on your scheduled departure date. At the same time, your "My Number" Card will automatically become invalid.

You could keep the card as a memento, but if you do not wish to do so, we will collect it at the counter.

If you think you may return to Japan and re-register as a resident in the future, please bring your invalidated "My Number" Card to the counter. This will exempt you from the fee when applying for a new "My Number" Card. Therefore, if you have such plans, please take care not to lose it.

Please note that notification of moving abroad cannot be submitted via the app using your "My Number" Card. You must submit a paper moving-out notification form either in person at the ward office or by post.
